Jackets outlast Riesel on the road

By Brett Voss

For the first time since 2008, the Meridian Yellowjackets have opened the season with back-to-back victories. But against the Riesel Indians, it didn’t come easily. In a contest that produced seven lead changes, Meridian finally broke the see-saw pattern by scoring 12 unanswered points and shutting down the Indians in the fourth quarter to secure a wild 33-28 victory in Riesel last Friday night.

Clifton crushes Rosebud-Lott, 40-13

By Brett Voss

It could be argued that the Clifton Cubs have one of the toughest non-district schedules among Class 3A, Division II teams across the state. So chalking up the season’s first victory in the home opener takes some pressure off a relatively young squad trying to rebuild after losing a large and talented senior class in 2014.

Cubs hits speed bump in opener

When the Clifton Cubs traveled to West for the 2015 Texas high school football season opener last Friday night, it didn’t turn out to be the beginning they were looking for as the lights went out. But after battling to a 37-17 loss to the West Trojans in a contest closer than the score indicated, the Cubs walked away with positive things to build on.

Jackets open 2015 football season

Hoping to build on the momentum and success experienced during the first season under Head Coach Chris Roberts last year, the Meridian Yellowjackets will open the 2015 Texas high school football season at home this Friday. Following a controlled and live action scrimmage at Class 3A, Division II Rio Vista last Friday, Roberts felt better about the way the Jackets were progressing toward their season opener. The Class 2A, Division II Jackets gave the Eagles all they could handle during both sessions.

Cubs ready to kick off 2015 season

By Brett Voss

While playing two scrimmages have helped Clifton football head coach Chuck Caniford and his staff identify areas to work on before the 2015 Texas high school football season begins, the Cubs will definitely undergo a trial by fire in the season opener this week. Hitting the road to face the West Trojans at 7:30 p.m. Friday, the Class 3A, Division II Cubs will be facing a Class 3A, Division I squad not only expected to make the playoffs this season, but to challenge for the District 9-3A, DI title. Regardless, Caniford sounds ready for the season and confident in the potential of his team this season.

Jackets struggle in first scrimmage

By Brett Voss

If the old adage “playing good teams make you better” holds true, the Meridian Yellowjackets certainly made the right choice to scrimmage the Santo Wildcats last week. Taking on the Class 2A, Division II regional semifinalists expected to compete with state finalist Albany for the District 8-2A, DII title this season, the Jacket varsity struggled on both sides of the ball as Santo outplayed Meridian, 4-0, at Jacket Stadium last Friday. The Meridian junior varsity faired better, outscoring the Santo JV, 1-0.
