Wright named to first-team squad

Although the Meridian Yellowjacket boys basketball squad missed the Class 2A postseason, they were rewarded for coming close. Meridian junior Tyler Wright was selected to the all-District 17-2A first team and junior Clayton Pinkerton made the second team, while senior Ethan Hightower, junior Dallas Anderson and sophomore John Anderson were honorable mentions.

Lady Jackets place three on all-district first-team

After advancing to the Class 2A girls basketball playoffs for the second consecutive season, the Meridian Lady Jackets were rewarded for their efforts. Meridian seniors Ashlee Hooks, Sydney Purcell and Krista Warren were selected to the all-District 17-2A first team, juniors Abby Stauffer and Carson Gebhardt made the second team, while senior Eden Carson, junior Natalee Rowland and sophomores Selina Reynoso and Emma Hooks were honorable mentions.

Clifton boys hoops end rough season on road

Despite producing one of their finest quarters or the season, it wasn’t enough for the Clifton boys basketball team to pull out their first District 19-3A victory in the season finale last Friday. Playing hard to the final buzzer, the Cubs scored 28 fourth quarter points but still fell short in a 68-55 loss to McGregor.

Cubs baseball set to open season

Coming off back-to-back trips to the Class 3A regional quarterfinals, the Clifton Cub baseball team expects to make it three in a row, if not then some. But after graduating nine seniors from last year’s 20-6-2 squad, the Cubs will need to reload around a core group of four returning starters when the open the 2016 Texas high school baseball season at the McGregor Tournament this Thursday- Saturday.

Despite remaining competitive in every game they played, the Clifton Cubs boys basketball team wrapped up a tough 2015- 16 Texas high school basketball season Tuesday night at McGregor still looking for their first District 19-3A win.

Hard work pays off for Jacket

Hours of practice in wind, rain and heat, literally leaving blood, sweat and tears on the track have paid off for a long distance track and cross country runner. With proud parents, grandparents, classmates and coaches present along with cake and balloons to celebrate the happy occasion, Meridian High School senior Latham Hensley signed a letter of intent with McMurray University in Abilene on National Signing Day Feb. 3.

Lady Jackets set up showdown

The Meridian Lady Jacket girls basketball did what they had to do last week to secure a playoff berth and set up the shwodown with the team to beat in District 17-2A. After dismantling Bosque County arch rival Valley Mills, 50-35, last Tuesday on Senior Night at Jacket Gymnasium, the Lady Jackets handed Waco Meyer a solid 39-30 loss last Friday night to set up Tuesday’s showdown with first place Bosqueville (8-1 in district, 20-1 overall).

Clifton boys wrap up with three district tilts

Still in search for their first District 19-3A win, the Clifton Cubs head into the final week of the 2015-16 Texas high school basketball season with three games to play. League-leading Teague scored 21 first quarter points and jumped out to a 29-point halftime lead on its way to a convincing 88-53 victory over Clifton (0-11 in district, 5-23 overall) last Tuesday. With the win, Teague (11-0, 18-4) remained undefeated in district, a game ahead of Whitney (10-1, 20-6).

Lady Cubs eliminated from chase

Facing two must-win games in the District 19-3A playoff chase last week, the Clifton Lady Cub girls basketball squad came up just a little short both times. Despite jumping out to an early lead and still holding a three-point advantage heading into the final period, the Lady Cubs could not hold off a furious fourth quarter rally as Teague prevailed, 34-29, last Tuesday night.
