Clifton moves into postion for playoffs

Despite losing to top-ranked and defending state champion West last Friday, the Clifton Cubs moved into position to make another run at a postseason berth with an impressive 16-3 victory over Teague last Tuesday to open the second round of District 19-3A compeition. Sitting at third place in the district race behind West (8-0 in district, 17-1 overall) and Bruceville-Eddy (5-3, 12- 4), the Cubs (4-4, 13-7-2) enjoy an open date in the schedule on Tuesday before traveling to McGregor to face the fourth place Bulldogs (3-4, 10-5) in a key district game this Friday.

Meridian track travels to Axtell meet

With just one more meet remaining before the district track and field championships April 13-14 in Meridian, several Yellowjacket and Lady Jacket athletes appear poised to make a run at state. Senior Latham Hensley and junior Dallas Anderson set new school records as the Meridian boys placed fourth with 73 points at the Axtell Longhorn Relays last Saturday, trailing meet champion Bosqueville (124), Valley Mills (103) and host Axtell (77).

Clifton rebounds to post big victory

With their backs against the wall as they wrapped up the first round of District 19-3A competition last week, the Clifton Cubs delivered arguably their best performance of the season. It couldn’t have come at a better time. Locked in a five-team tie for second place behind the state’s Class 3A top-ranked West, the Cubs smashed Blooming Grove, 9-0, last Friday night.

Clifton posts crucial win at Whitney

Shaking off the disappointment of losing a District 19-3A home game to McGregor last week, the Clifton Cub baseball team took its show on the road and made a statement. Behind a stellar pitching effort by Brayden Wise, the Cubs held off a late surge by Whitney to post a much-needed 4-3 victory last Thursday. Tossing a complete game, Wise racked up eight strikeouts while allowing two earned runs, six hits and one walk.

Lady Cubs open second round

After opening District 19-3A competition with a win, the Clifton Lady Cub softball team has lost five straight. Now as the Lady Cubs open the second round of district play this week, Clifton (1-5 in district, 12-9-1 overall) looks to get back on track.

McGregor shocks Cubs at home

After opening District 19-3A competition with an impressive 10-0 shutout of Teague, the Clifton Cub baseball team have fallen on hard times. Class 3A’s top-ranked West came to Clifton last Tuesday and handed the Cubs a hardfought 6-0 loss.

Meridian baseball hits hard times

After winning their District 14-2A opener over Hico in convincing fashion last week, the Meridian Yellowjackets proved no match for the state’s sixth-ranked and undefeated Bosqueville Bulldogs. Bosqueville demonstrated why it’s favored to win its sixth straight district title as the Bulldogs dismantled Meridian on their way to a overwhelming 16-1 victory in four innings last Tuesday night.

Cubs win big in district opener

After waiting an extra week to open District 19-3A competition, the Clifton Cub baseball team made the most of it with their league opener on the road Monday. Behind the pitching performance of Jordan Larance, the Cubs blew out Teague with a stunning 10-0 shutout. Teague had no answer for Larance, who kept runners off the base-paths, giving up just one hit, alloweingno earned runs, walking one and striking out seven during his six innings of work.

Clifton softball falls to Teague

After the inclement weather put a damper on their season for a week, the Clifton Lady Cub softball team suffered their first District 19-3A loss in a make-up game against Teague Monday. After posting four runs in the fourth, Teague again scored four in the fifth to take control of the game on their way to a 10-0 victory over Clifton.

After postponement, Jackets sting Hico, 16-8

By Brett Voss After getting a week off during Spring Break and seeing their District 14-2A opener postponed due to weather, the Meridian Yellowjacket baseball club finally got back on the field. And once it was all said and done, the layoffpaid off. Pitchers from both teams had a rough day, but Jacket hitters feasted on Hico as Meridian slugged its way to a convincing 16-8 victory over the Tigers Monday afternoon.
