Cubs on all-state academic squad

When Texas High School Coaches Association released their Academic All-State Football Teams Monday afternoon, Clifton’s senior Brayden Wise (9) was named to the first-team, Academic All-State squad and senior Tanner Thomas (24) was selected to the second-team Academic All-State. To be nominated, the student-athletes must maintain at least a 92 grade point average during their high school career. “This is a tremendous honor for these young men,” Clifton football head coach Chuck Caniford said.

Lady Cubs strong at Moody Tourney

Playing in the Moody Tournament last weekend, the Clifton Lady Cubs split four games and junior Mackenzie Wells was named to the All-Tournament Team. Before traveling to Moody over the weekend, the Lady Cubs (7-4) visited Hillsboro and posted a solid 47-38 victory last Tuesday. Despite falling behind early and trailing 16-15 at intermission, Clifton grabbed the lead in the third quarter then pulled away with 18 points in the fourth.

Jacket efforts honored by coaches

After returning to the playoffs with a fourth place finish in District 10-2A, Division II, the Meridian Yellowjackets were recognized for their efforts. The Jackets (6-5 overall) were awarded with six first-team, all-district selections, along with eight more players being placed on the second team.

Lady Jackets look to make run

With eight varsity lettermen from last season’s playoff squad, the Meridiand Lady Jackets have a lot to look forward to for the 2015-16 girls basketball season. But after opening with a solid 59-48 victory over Dublin, the Lady Jackets have struggled to put anything together. But they hope to correct that this weekend at the Riesel Tournament.

Lady Cubs open hoop season strong

The Clifton Lady Cubs traveled to the Hamilton Tournament November 19-21 and came away with a second place finish in the gold bracket. Early Thursday morning the Lady Cubs ran into a buzz saw, falling to Hamilton, 61-31, in the tournament opener. Clifton bounced back and beat Rio Vista, 55-38, in the second game of the day.

Meridian gets back into state playoffs

After getting off to the best start in more than a decade, the Meridian Yellowjackets struggled to overcome injuries down the stretch and qualified for the Class 2A, Division II playoffs as the district’s fourth place team. In the post-season, the Jackets were forced to play seventh-ranked Muenster and paid the price as Meridian fell, 55-25, in its bi-district playoff game.

Clifton victorious in playoffs again

This time of year in the Texas high school football season, teams face a do-or-die situation, and winning gold balls proved to be a very elusive prize for many. But for the Clifton Cubs, it proved to be a trophy-raising, standard-setting night. In a rematch of last season’s bi-district playoff game, Clifton left no doubt as the Cubs completely dominated Palmer from the opening kickoff on their way to a convincing 46-7 victory at Alvarado’s Charlie Head Stadium last Friday.
