Meridian runs over Wortham

By Brett Voss

For the first time since 2001, the Meridian Yellowjackets have opened the season with four consecutive victories. But none have been more important than the last one. Opening District 10-2A, Division II competition at Jacket Stadium last Friday night, Meridian made a statement with an impressive 40-8 victory over Wortham to remain undefeated. Senior running back Dion Estrada rushed for 143 yards and three touchdowns while senior running back Jaime Reynoso ran for two more as the Jackets (1-0 in district, 4-0 overall) methodically dismantled Wortham (0-1, 2-3).

Bosque County teams eye district

By Brett Voss

Bosque County teams continue to look strong and playoff worthy as teams behind to look ahead to district competition. While Meridian remained undefeated as only area team to play a district game last week, all eight county teams will move into league play during the next two weeks. Last season, only two county teams posted winning records and only one qualified for the postseason. As the 2015 season hit midseason, four teams have posted winning records while five appear poised to make legitimate runs at playoff berths.

Cubs take lumps, learn lessons in defeat

By Brett Voss

For the Clifton Cubs, it’s going to get harder before it gets any easier. After all, the Cubs may have on of the toughest non-district schedules of any team in Class 3A. But then again, if one looks ahead to the District 10-3A, Division II lineup, Cliftyon may never catch a break. So, before it’s all said and done, the Cubs will have to make their own breaks.

Meridian opens district Friday

By Brett Voss

For the first time since 2001, the Meridian Yellowjackets will head into district competition undefeated. But the Jackets had to battle to final second and beyond to secure a 21-18 victory over the DeLeon Bearcats in their final non-district game last Friday night at Jacket Stadium. “It is great to come out of non-district unbeaten, but honestly we’re all 0-0 now that district has started,” Meridian head coach Chris Robert said. “Everyone is even at 0-0, and we are all going to try to get to the top of the standings at the start.”

County squads looking ahead

By Brett Voss

For the first time this season, Bosque County teams posted a losing record last week, in part due to Cranfills Gap having its second open date in the first four games of the season. But among the area victories posted last week, Meridian and Walnut Springs remained undefeated. Lions long-time head coach Kyle Doty wisely limited the number of non-district games on the schedule this season in an attempt to keep enough players on the roster healthy for district competition.
