Lady Cubs split two games in District 19-3A competition

After returning from the holiday break with a solid performance at the Hillsboro Holiday Tournament, the Clifton Lady Cubs girls basketball team returned to District 19-3A action last week. And after knocking off Whitney at home last Tuesday, the Lady Cubs struggled on the road against Teague last Friday.

Jackets, Lady Jackets victorious after holidays

Staying home for the holidays proved to be just what the doctor ordered for the Meridian Yellowejacket boys basketball team. With returning starters Dallas Anderson and Clayton Pinkerton finally in the lineup together after missing the first part of the season due to injuries, the Jackets came back from a 14-day layoff to post an overwhelming 115-9 victory over Waco Harmony Science Academy in their District 17-2A opener last Saturday.

Clifton boys, girls in holiday tourneys

After taking 10 days off for Christmas, the Clifton Lady Cub girls basketball squad geared up to return to district competition by playing in the Hillsboro Holiday Tournament Dec. 28-30. Senior Hope Harris was named to the all-tournament team after the Lady Cubs posted a 3-2 record. “The girls did a good job throughout the tournament,” Clifton girls basketball head coach Stephen Bateson said. “I am proud of how the girls played coming off of the break. I feel we are in good shape going back into district play. It was nice to have Maria Chavez back on the court.”

Clifton Lady Cub

Clifton Lady Cub junior varsity in action before the holiday break. The Clifton boys varsity squad returned to action this week in the Itasca Tournament while the Lady Cub varsity hit the road to participate in the Hillsboro Tournament.

Lady Cubs drop two straight in district

After winnng three consecutive games including the District 19-3A opener against Bruceville- Eddy, the Clifton Lady Cub girls basketball squad has fallen on hard times. But then again, the competition may have something to do with that. Last Tuesday, Clifton fell to McGregor, 47- 36, to snap the Lady Cub winning streak despite team-high 13 points and six rebounds from junior Mackenzie Wells.

Clifton boys struggle before break

Despite improving as a team overall, the Clifton boys basketball team struggled in non-district and tournament competition as it prepared for District 19-3A play. Unfortunately for the Cubs, the struggles continued as they opened district competition with a disappointing 41-33 loss at Marlin last Friday to extend their losing streak to five straight.

Clifton boys struggle at Hamilton tourney

Despite breaking a four-game losing streak with a solid 56-44 victory over Bosque County rival Meridian at home last Tuesday, the Clifton Cubs boys basketball team continues to struggle in tournaments. After losing four straight in the Blooming Grove Tournament two weeks ago, the Cubs dropped three consecutive matchups at the Hamilton Tournament last week.

Lady Cubs open district with win

After getting off to a solid start to the 2015-16 Texas girls basketball season with consistent performances in non-district games and tournaments, the Clifton Lady Cubs were confident entering District 19-3A competition last week. In their district opener at home last Tuesday, the Lady Cubs let a fast start carry them to an impressive 41-25 victory over Bruceville-Eddy. .

Lady Jackets turn it up a notch

After opening the 2015-16 Texas high school girls basketball season working to come together as a team, the Meridian Lady Jackets began to reap the rewards last weekend at the Riesel Tournament. The Lady Jackets won three of four games over the weekend to claim third place in the tournament as Emma Hook and Carson Gebhardt were named to the all-tournament team.

Cubs on all-state academic squad

When Texas High School Coaches Association released their Academic All-State Football Teams Monday afternoon, Clifton’s senior Brayden Wise (9) was named to the first-team, Academic All-State squad and senior Tanner Thomas (24) was selected to the second-team Academic All-State. To be nominated, the student-athletes must maintain at least a 92 grade point average during their high school career. “This is a tremendous honor for these young men,” Clifton football head coach Chuck Caniford said.
