He lived in Dallas until his junior year in high school then moved to Clifton with his family. He graduated from Clifton High School and attended Clifton College. He left Clifton and started working for the Mercantile Bank in Dallas as a bookkeeper for a number of years. He then went to work for Texas Power and Light which became TXU Energy. He worked first as a draftsman and then moved outdoors as a field engineer. He loved this job which he held from 1955 to 1987. He took an early retirement offer in 1987 from TXU. He married Joy Thompson in 1990 in Irving. They moved back to Clifton in 1992 and have made their home in Clifton since that time. He joined the First Baptist Church and that became a vital part of his life. He served as an usher, teller, deacon, and on multiple committees and ministry groups. He enjoyed Senior Adult ministry and especially game day – he loved to play “42”. He worked at the Clifton Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, VBS, AARP, and was also part of an intercessory prayer group that met on a weekly basis for years. He loved history and particularly the history of trains and railroading. He traveled to take trips on most all the narrow gauge railroads in Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. He was an avid model train enthusiast and had built a number of HO scale model railroads with multiple engines and trains with all sorts of landscapes. He was a rail fan and never got tired of learning new information regarding the history of railroading in the United States and the world. He was also an avid Ford enthusiast and loved the oldies. He was so happy that he had been able to spend a lot of time with his grandchildren and great-grandchilren. They all loved their special time with “Grandpa Claude.” He was preceded in death by his parents, and a grandmother, Viola Harris Watley, who helped raise him.
