Bosque Chorale presents epic concert
By Simone Wichers-Voss
The Bosque Chorale will present selections from Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Thursday, April 20 at Trinity Lutheran Church at 7:30 p.m. with Maestro David Anavitarte leading a choir of fifty-four voices accompanied by strings and keyboard. Soloists include Karen Atkins, Karen Thomasy, John Upchurch, and Steve Watson.
The fiery oratorio recounts the tale of the Old Testament prophet Elijah as he confronts both the political and spiritual apostasy of his day. God has stricken the land of Israel with drought and famine in response to the nation’s wickedness. Elijah intercedes on behalf of the nation and challenges the priests of Baal, a Canaanite fertility god, to a showdown. Both Elijah and the priests are to present sacrifices and the God who answers by fire will be the god of the land. Baal is a no-show.
