Clifton softball posts win, but struggles in tourney

By Brett Voss

After extending their losing streak to eight straight with a district opening loss to Whitney Feb. 27, the Clifton Lady Cub softball squad hoped to get back on the right track by hosting the Lady Cub Tournament last weekend.

Although the Lady Cubs snapped the losing streak with a 10-8 tournament opening win over Mexia last Friday, Clifton closed out the event with three consecutive losses to Glen Rose, 11-2, Rio Vista, 6-2, and the Midway JV, 16-7, on Saturday.

Producing their biggest offensive outburst since their season opening win, the Lady Cubs (0-1 in district, 2-11 overall) overcame a 2-0 first inning deficit with four runs in the bottom of the first and six more in the second before shutting off a late Mexia rally for the win.

Senior Ashley Byrd knocked in two runs with two hits to lead the Lady Cubs, while sophomore Audrey Anderson, freshman Bailey Ledbetter and junior Stephanie Schmidt scored two runs apiece.
