Bosque County sends four teams into postseason tourneys

Iredell wins district; Meridian, Walnut Springs runnerups

With four of the area’s eight high school football teams advancing to the state playoffs in three different classifications, Bosque County has already enjoyed a banner season. But they aren’t done yet. Boasting two district champions and two runner-ups, the four county post-season participants -- Clifton in Class 3A, Meridian in Class 2A, along with Iredell and Walnut Springs in Class 1A six-man football -- hope to bring home their share of playoff game victories.

Clifton captures district crown

In a battle of two unbeaten teams playing for the District 11-3A, Division II title, the showdown turned out to be everything players, coaches and fans hoped it would be. And for the Clifton Cubs, especially the final score. Led by a career performance by junior running back Marc Gutierrez, the Cubs knocked off the Dallas Triple A Academy Stallions, 35-21, at South Grand Prairie High School last Friday night to clinch Clifton first district crown since 2002.

Clifton cross country sends two to state

Competing at the Class 3A, Region 3 Cross Country Championship at Kate Barr Ross Memorial Park in Huntsville, the Clifton boys and girls cross country teams advanced two individuals to state. Running as a lone individual representing the Clifton boys, Israel Pina placed seventh in a time of 18:06.0 across the 5,000-meter course to advance, while Chansey Urbanovsky led the Lady Cubs with a 14thplace finish to qualify for state.

Lady Cubs close out season

Battling in the tough class 3A, District 19, the Clifton Lady Cub volleyball squad has been outmatched most of the season as West and Whitney have dominated the league. The Lady Cubs will close out the 2016 season at Troy this Tuesday.

Cubs set for classic showdown

Since Clifton head coach Chuck Caniford took over the Cub football program three years ago, his teams have systematically took it to the next level each season. By winning their fourth straight District 11-3A, Division II game convincingly, the Clifton Cubs clinched their third consecutive trip to the post-season for the first time since 1971.

Cubs take sole possession of 1st

Sometimes, it’s just a case of needing to take care of business. And on the road last Saturday afternoon, that’s exactly what the Clifton Cubs did with methodical precision. Junior running back Marc Gutierrez rushed for 208 yards and three touchdowns as the Cubs ran all over Dallas A-Plus Academy on their way to an overwhelming 42-0 victory at Lancaster High’s Beverly D. Humphrey Tiger Stadium.

Clifton advances to regionals

After all of the hard work, the Clifton boys and girls cross country teams put it all on the line at the District 19-3A Championship meet last Wednesday at McGregor High School. Led by Chansey Urbanovsky and Daniella Gaona, the Lady Cubs placed third as a team to advance to the Class 3A Region III Championship to be held Oct. 29 at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. The Clifton boys fell short of qualifying as a team with a fifth place finish, but Cub Israel Pina took the bronze medal to advance to regionals individually.

Clifton downs Rice for 1st place

In the first of several key District 11-3A, Division II matchups, the Clifton Cubs showed why they entered the season as the league favorites. Facing one of only two teams still unbeaten in district play, Clifton wore down the Rice Bulldogs to pull away with a convincing 45-12 victory last Friday on homecoming night at Cub Stadium.

Bosque County turns to district races

Although the Class 3A Clifton Cubs and the Class 2A Meridian Yellowjackets grabbed the spotlight with big district wins last week, the Bosque County six-man teams took a beating. In Class 3A, Clifton remained one of only two teams still unbeaten in District 11-3A, Division II. In Class 2A action, Meridian opened District 10-2A, DII competition with a resounding victory, but Valley Mills suffered its second straight District 7-2A, DI loss.

Jackets begin district battle Friday

When the Meridian Yellowjackets headed into their open date in the schedule last week, they soon found out they had more to enjoy than the glow of back-to-back, heart-stopping, last-minute victories. In fact, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football selected Meridian as the Class 2A Team of the Week for Week 5 after the Jackets came from behind to knock off Rosebud-Lott, 29-27, in overtime, spoiling the Cougars’ homecoming.
