Clifton advances to area playoffs

Cub baseball sweeps Rogers to win Bi-District; faces Maypearl in area round

by Brett Voss

After stumbling into the Class 3A post-season tournament by losing three of their last four games and finishing fourth in District 19-3A, the Clifton Cubs shook off the skid and looked like the team that battled for the district title against the best the state had to offer.

Facing District 20-3A champion Rogers in a best of three game series, the Cubs won a wild 10-9 slugfest last Friday at Waco ISD’s Veteran Field #1 before sweeping the Eagles with a 3-0 shutout Saturday.

“I’m super proud of the kids for the way they competed and the enthusiasm they played with throughout the series,” Clifton baseball head coach Brian Slater said. “Rogers is a quality program and to be able to sweep them in two took our best and forced us to play at a high level.”

Meridian’s Anderson puts 100-meter dash win streak on the line

by Brett Voss

With one of the state’s elite sprinters leading the way, Bosque County will be well represented at this week’s UIL Track & Field State Championships being held Thursday-Saturday at University of Texas’ Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

In Class 2A, Meridian’s lone qualifier will be senior sprinter Dallas Anderson, who will be attempting to keep his season-long win streak in the 100-meter dash intact. Anderson captured the gold medal with a time of 10.94 at the Class 2A, Region II Track and Field Championships at Pojo Stadium in Springtown.

“I had hoped for a higher finish and more guys qualifying for state, but I am still proud of the effort,” Meridian boys track coach Darrell Selke said. “Dallas qualified for state as he continued his win streak in the 100 meter dash. Both relays were in the mix and represented Meridian very well.”

After winning Game 1 in bi-district, Yellowjackets swept in Game 2 & 3

by Brett Voss

Just when they thought they were on the verge of something really special, the Meridian Yellowjackets watched it slip away. But not before they locked down some significant milestones.

Playing in a Class 2A bi-district playoff against Perrin-Whitt, the Jackets won the first game of a best of three games series last Thursday.

But on Friday, the Pirates took both ends of a doubleheader at Azle High School to win the series, 2-1, and move on to the area round to face District 16 runner-up Riesel.

Cub baseball in playoffs

By Brett Voss

Just when it looked like the Clifton Cubs had the Texas high school baseball world excatly where they wanted it, back-to-back one-run losses changed everything.

Although Clifton had already secured its fourth consecutive trip to the Class 3A state playoffs, the Cubs shockingly lost their regular season District 19-3A finale at McGregor, 7-6, last Tuesday. Going into the game, McGregor had only posted one district win. And in the process, the Cubs fell back into a tie for third place with seventh-ranked Troy in the tight four-team district race, forcing a tiebreaker playoff to determine seeding for the playoffs.
