Football accolades keep coming for Cubs

Clifton’s Gutierrez named to Super CenTex first team; Caniford selected to coach Victory Bowl

After winning their first district championship since 2002 and making the Class 3A playoffs for the third consecutive season, the Clifton Cubs continue to draw accolades for their achievements.

Junior running back Marc Gutierrez was named to the 2016 Waco Tribune-Herald’s Super Centex first team, while senior offensive lineman Jesus Enriquez made the second team. Senior two-way starter Clayton Caniford, senior defensive lineman Clayton Bayer and junior defensive lineman Mason Oliver drew honorable mention.

Lady Cubs get back in the win column

Clifton girls snap two-game losing streak, edging Groesbeck, 35-34

By knocking off Groesbeck last Friday night, the Clifton Lady Cub girls basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak to stay in the thick of the District 19-3A playoff chase.

West stayed in the three-team log-jam at the top of the district with Marlin and Mc- Gregor by knocking off Clifton, 37-23, last Tuesday. The Lady Trojans put the game away by taking a 17-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

While no Clifton player scoring in double figures, senior Makayla Meador led the Lady Cubs with six points, followed by senior Catherine Pieri and Mackenzie Wells with four each.

“Defensively we did a great job of executing our game plan,” Clifton girls basketball head coach Jamie Duke said. “We just struggled offensively.”

Meridian girls open 2nd round of district

Lady Jackets knock off Ranger, 52-35

After dropping bacvk-to-back District 10-2A games coming out of the holiday break, the Meridian Lady Jackets snapped the skid just in time to make the turn into the second round of district play.

In a defensive battle, Goldthwaite knocked off the Lady Jackets, 34- 21, last Tuesday before Meridian rebounded to hand Ranger a convincing 52-35 defeat last Friday.

Senior Carson Gebhardt led the Lady Jackets with 11 points against Goldthwaite. Senior Abby Stauffer led the way against Ranger with 16 points, followed by Selina Reynoso with 10 and Emma Hooks with seven.

“In the Goldthwaite game, there was good defense by both teams,” Meridian girls basketball head coach Chris Hicks said. “Very poor shooting and shot selection doomed us.

Jackets draw all-district honors

Meridian gets 10 first-team selections after winning first playoff game since 1999

After finishing second only to three-time state champion Bremond in District 10-2A, Divisiom II before winning its first playoff game since 1999, the Meridian Yellowjackets were recognized for their feats.

With seniors Dallas Anderson and Jason Dashner selected as two-way first-teamers, the Jackets nabbed 10 first-team all-district spots and another five on the second team.

Lady Cubs split pair of district games

Clifton girls see 7-game win streak snapped in 58-35 loss to Marlin

After extending their winning streak to seven straight games with District 19- 3A victory last Tuesday, the Clifton Lady Cub girls basketball team finally saw its run of fortune come to an end.

The Lady Cubs finished strong to knock off Bruceville-Eddy, 42-35, last Tuesday, but Marlin left no doubt as the Lady Bulldogs handed Clifton a convincing 58-35 loss last Friday.

Clifton boys, girls hoops resume play

After an extended break during the Christmas holidays, the Clifton boys and girls basketball teams returned to action last week at the Itasca Tournament hoping to shake off the rust in time to resume District 19- 3A competition this week. The Lady Cubs (1-2 in district, 14-8 overall) notched their first district win Dec. 20 with a convincing 62-25 victory over Troy. Sophomore Sidney Harris led Clifton with 24 points, followed by Gracee Hilburn with 14.

Hooping it up over the holidays

After taking a week off to celebrate Christmas, the Clifton Cubs had their festive mood dampered with a heartbreaking double overtime 71-65 loss to Troy in their District 19-3A opener last Tuesday. Now after taking seven days off for Christmas, the Cubs return to action this week at the Itasca Tournament before resuming district competition at Bruceville-Eddy Jan. 3.

Lady Cubs stumble in district opener

Each time the final buzzer sounded, the Clifton Lady Cubs finished so close. But as they head into the Christmas holiday break, the Lady Cubs will still be looking for their first District 19-3A girls basketball victory of the season.

After falling in their district opener, 41-38, to Whitney last Tuesday, the Lady Cubs could not overcome an early deficit, losing to Mc- Gregor, 59-56, last Friday. Coming off back-toback three point losses, Clifton 0-2 in district, 8-8 overall) played host to Troy Tuesday before taking a week off for Christmas. The Lady Cubs will resume play at the Itasca Tournament Dec. 27-29.

Jackets open district this week

Wrapping up the non-district portion of their 2016-17 Texas high school boys basketball season last week, the Meridian Yellowjackets turn their attention to what should be a tough District 2A race. After hanging on to knock off Morgan, 57-53 last Tuesday, the Jackets fell to Wortham, 50-44, last Friday at home.

Lady Jackets struggle in Hubbard tourney

Despite an all-tournament effort from Selina Reynoso and Abby Stauffer, the Meridian Lady Jackets struggled in the Hubbard Tournament last weekend. Meridian (9-7) opened last week with an overwhelming 73-15 victory over Kopperl behind 25 points by Carson Gebhardt.
