Cubs tied for 1st place

Clifton baseball visits Groesbeck in showdown

Featuring four teams ranked among the state’s top 20 in Class 3A, the battle for the District 19- 3A title will go down to the game. But none will be bigger than when the 15th-ranked Clifton Cubs visit the seventh-ranked Groesbeck Goats this Tuesday night.

By knocking off defending state champion and 17th-ranked West, 5-2, last Thursday, the Cubs (7-2 in district, 15-4 overall) moved into a first place tie with Groesbeck (7-2, 16-5), while eighth-ranked Troy (7-3, 18-5) and West (6-3, 12-8-2) remain close behind in the remarkable four-team battle.

Clifton boys, girls race to area

Cubs place second as a team, advance all three relay teams to area in Cameron

After battling in a highly-competitive field at the District 19-3A Track & Field Championships last Wednesday and Thursday in Whitney, the Clifton boys and girls will be well represented at the at the Area Championships this Wednesday in Cameron.

The Clifton boys will be sending eight athletes to compete in 10 events at the Area meet, including all three relay runs, after placing second overall as a team by scoring 88 points.

Meridian boys win Jacket Relays title

Jacket, Lady Jackets focus on District 10-2A Championships in Hico

In the final dress rehearsal before the district championships this week, the Meridian boys and girls track and field teams hosted the Annual Jacket Relays last Thursday.

After the final race ended, the Jackets looked primed for the big show.

The Meridian boys captured first place as a team by scoring 141 points, besting Italy (87), and Valley Mills (71) in the 10-team field.

Cubs keep pace in district race

Groesbeck takes over lead; Clifton, Troy, West tied for second in District 19-3A

Despite opening the second round of District 19- 3A competition with a heartbreaking 2-1 walkoff loss to Troy in eight innings last Tuesday, the Clifton Cubs rebounded for an overwhelming 17-1 thrashing of Bruceville-Eddy last Friday to keep pace in the tight four-team race for the league pennant.

After visiting Class 4A Lorena Tuesday after press time for a non-district game, the Cubs (6-2 in district, 14-4 overall) returns home to host defending state champion West (5-2, 11-7-2) in a key district showdown.

Clifton shares District 19-3A lead

Clifton, Groesbeck open second round tied at the top; West, Troy hot on trail

As they wrapped up the first round of District 19- 3A baseball competition last week, the Clifton Cubs found themselves exactly where they wanted to be.

In overwhelming fashion, the Cubs took care of business by crushing Whitney, 15-3, Tuesday before blanking McGregor, 10-0, Friday. By doing so, Clifton stayed atop of the district standings, sharing the lead with the seventh-ranked Groesbeck Goats.

Records set at Relays

Clifton boys win team title at Cub Relays

There’s no place like home. And for the Clifton boys and girls track and field teams, nothing could have been more true at the annual Cub Relays last Thursday.

Claiming the team championship, the Clifton boys tallied 150 points to outscore second place Crawford. And along the way, the Cubs set a new school record in the 4x100-meter relay and a new Cub Relay record in the 4x100-meter relay.

Clifton hosts relays

After enjoying yet another strong showing, the Clifton boys and girls track and field teams come home to host the Cub Relays with the high school varsity and junior varsity running Thursday, followed by the middle school divisions on Friday.

Competing in the Hamilton Extraco Bulldog Relays last Thursday, the Cubs finished second with 128 points, trailing only meet champion Crawford (181.3). Individually, Clayton Bayer brought home two gold medals in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles, while Isaak Santillan won the 100-meter dash and Israel Pina took the gold in the 800-meter run.

Three’s company in district race

If the first round of District 19-3A competition foreshadows things to come, area high school baseball fans are in for a wild finish.

As the district looks to wrap up the first round this week, defending Class 3A state champion West, fourth-ranked Groesbeck and 13th-ranked Clifton remain in a three-way tie for first with fifth-ranked Troy hot on their heels.

Last Friday, the Cubs used an impressive comeback to down the visiting Groesbeck Goats, 8-7, as Hutch Kettler delivered a dramatic one-out, two-run single for the walk-off win, surging Clifton into a share of the top spot.

Clifton hits track

Boys, girls return to action at Hamilton

After taking last week off for Spring Break, the Clifton boys and girls track and field teams return to action by competing at the Hamilton Meet this Thursday.

In dominating fashion, the Clifton boys and girls track and field teams ran away with the teams titles on all levels at the Moody Bearcat Relays March 9 before the break.

Cub baseball faces key showdowns

Clifton faces state-ranked West, Groesbeck

Coming off an overwhelming 14-3 victory over Bruceville-Eddy and an open date during Spring Break last week, the Clifton Cub baseball team returns to action facing its biggest challenges of the season.

Playing in what could be considered the toughest Class 3A district in the state, the 13th-ranked Cubs hit the road to face defending state champion and ninth-ranked West after press time Tuesday evening before returning home to host fourth-ranked Groesbeck at 7 p.m, Friday.
