Celeste was born June 25, 1929 in Oxford, Ms, to Charles Wesley Nicholas and Eutha Celeste Samson. The last to arrive in a set of fraternal twins with brother Wesley. The twins were welcomed home by older sister Ophelia. Celeste grew up in the Union West Community where she married Charles Martin in 1947, and from this marriage two children were born, Charles Fredrick Martin and Sharon Marie. In 1952, the family moved to Cranfills Gap, Tx, and later to Clifton Tx where Celeste, known to many as Polly, worked for many years as floor lady at Walls Manufacturing. She also worked tediously at night in front of her sewing machine to provide so many people with custom made rodeo riding outfits.
In Oct. 1970, she married Marvin Mattlage and moved to Crawford and then a few short years later to the Mattlage Family Farm in the community of Prairie Chapel. Shortly thereafter, she retired from Walls Manufacturing and joined her husband working on the farm, maintaining a larger garden and beautiful flower beds surrounding the home they built together. Celeste continued sewing until she couldn’t physically sit at a sewing machine. She has made everything from pillow cases with matching doll dresses for children’s charities to bridesmaid dress and countless outfits for her family, friends, and even strangers. Celeste was also involved in serving the Lord through her service at Canaan Baptist Church. She served as church clerk, Sunday school teacher, and also provided the floral arrangements for church services.
Celeste was proceeded in her death by her parents, older sister Ophelia Madden; husband Marvin Mattlage; and beloved son Freddie Martin.
Those left behind to cherish her memory include daughter Sharon White and husband Keith of Laguna Park, grandson Michael Dorsey and wife Jackie of Gatesville, granddaughter Lisa Dorsey-Dromgoole of Laguna Park and great-granddaughter Senior Airman Sydney Dorsey of Biele AFB in California, twin brother Reverend Wesley Nicholas of Oxford, Ms; and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.
