In a recent press conference, Governor Greg Abbott announced he would end the current mask mandate and open businesses up 100%.

The new executive order will go into effect on March 10 and will rescind most earlier orders related to COVID-19.

The governor said hospitalizations related to COVID-10 were the lowest they have been in four months while active cases were the lowest they’ve been since November.  More Texans are recovering from COVID-19 than contracting it.  At a statewide level, positive cases have been under 10% for days.

“Now Texans have mastered the daily habits to keep from getting COVID,” said Abbott.  “State mandates are no longer needed.”

Under the new executive order, all businesses of any type will be allowed to open up to 100% capacity and the mask mandate will end.

“Removing state mandates does not end personal responsibility,” said Abbott.  “Personal vigilance is still needed.”

Abbott recommended Texans continue to follow medical advice and said businesses can still limit capacity and implement safety protocols if they so choose.

If COVID-19 hospitalizations rise above 15% in a hospital region, the county judge may use COVID mitigation strategies in their county.

If deemed necessary, the county judge can shut businesses down to no lower than 50% capacity.  However, the judge cannot jail anyone for not following orders or impose penalties for not wearing a mask.
