Patricia Ann Sommerfeld Lyon

Patricia Ann Sommerfeld Lyon was born Oct. 11, 1946 in Clifton, TX to R.F. and Ann (Urban) Sommerfeld. She passed into the arms of her heavenly Father Dec. 25, 2018 at Providence Hospital, Waco, TX, due to complications from a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Dec. 29, at Trinity Lutheran Church with interment at Clifton Cemetery.

Pat was raised on the family farm in Mosheim, TX where she attended school until eigth grade when she transferred to Valley Mills High School. In 1962, the family moved to Clifton where she graduated from Clifton High School in 1964.

She began her higher education journey at Southwest Texas State College -now Texas State University, Galveston College and University of Texas School of Nursing Galveston where she received her Bachelor in Science, Nursing degree in 1975.

Her nursing career took her to Colorado where she worked in Public Health and then served as Coordinator of Clinics for National Jewish Hospital in Denver where she fell in love with the mountains and sharing her love of skiing with family and friends.

She graduated from the University of Colorado School of Nursing Practitioner Certificate program in 1982 which led her to Nevada where she worked in Public Health, psychiatry and cardiology. After returning to Texas she received her Master of Psychiatric Nursing degree from UT San Antonio in 1986. She then went to work for the State of Texas in Public Health as supervisor for Region 1, overseeing 13 counties. In 1991, she moved to the Austin office working in Licensing and Certification conducting hospital surveys and complaint investigations, focused on psychiatric facilities that were under much needed investigation.

She started an independent consulting firm in 1991 which continued until 2013 when she retired to take care of her mother. She had hoped to return to her beloved nursing profession. However, after her mother died in 2013, Pat had developed health problems that escalated, resulting in her death.

Pat was active in the Lutheran Church ELCA. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Cranfills Gap from 1986-2006 and joined Trinity Lutheran Church in Clifton in 2007. She was a member of the WELCA Synod Board and active in her congregation.

Pat married Charles Smith in 1968 and Jay Lyon in 1982.

Preceding her in death were her parents and her sister Helen Amundson. She is survived by niece Deborah and husband Dennis Jones, nephew David and wife Diane Amundson, great nieces Amanda and husband Frank Martin, Abigail Amundson, Rhetta Amundson, great nephews Alex Amundson, Ryan and wife Caroline Jones and great-great nephew and niece Palmer and Evelyn Jones, as well as numerous cousins, extended family, friends and her beloved kitty Pepper.
