Clifton celebrates athletic success

As the 2022-23 Texas high school athletic year approaches its conclusion, the Clifton High School student-athletes, coaches, family and friends gathered at the CISD Performing Arts Center to celebrate their many accolades and achievements. Remarkably, the Cubs and Lady Cubs boast 16 student-athletes playing five different sports, while another 19 participate in four sports programs.

Meridian baseball playoff bound

For the first time in six seasons, the Meridian Yellowjackets wrapped up the Texas high school baseball season bound for the playoffs. Despite losing the District 14-1A first place playoff showdown to Jonesboro, 8-7, in a heartbreaker Monday night in Hamilton, the Jackets enter the Class 1A postseason as the district’s second place team.

Continuing what has proven to be a banner 2023 Texas high school track and field season, the Meridian boys and girls teams made their presence known at the Class 1A, Region III Championships April 28-29 at Whitney High School. “We have had a really good track season so far this year,” Meridian boys track head coach Grant Schur said.

Earning Trip To State

Continuing their successful run through the 2023 Texas high school track and field season, the Clifton boys and girls teams made their presence known at the Class 3A, Region III Championships April 2829 at Midway High School in Hewitt. After taking a deep and strong contingent of 17 athletes to the regional meet, the Clifton boys placed fourth overall as a team with 35 points in the 40-team field behind regional champion McGregor with 51 points, runner-up Whitney with 50 and Hitchcock with 44.

Clifton fishing qualifies for state

After winning the Central Texas High School Tournament Trail’s Lake Whitney Fishing Tournament April 16, Clifton High School seniors Westen and Peyten Urbanovsky qualified for The Bass Federation’s Student Anger Federation 14th Annual High School Fishing World Finals & National Championship June 20-24 on the Mississippi River at LaCrosse, Wisconsin. To qualify for the National Championship, Central Texas High School Tournament Trail teams must finish in the top five of all teams, small schools to large schools.

Claiming A Title Share

By sweeping to victory in each of their final three District 14-1A games, the Meridian Yellowjacket baseball team not only secured a berth into the Class 1A playoffs for the first time since 2017, the Jackets clinched a share of their first district title since 2010. But before heading into the postseason, the Jackets (7-1 in district, 9-7 overall) must face the Jonesboro Eagles (7-1, 155) for the third time in a tie-breaker showdown for first place at 7 p.m.

Meridian golf, tennis among elite

With all Spring sports turning their attention to the postseason quest for trips to state, the Meridian golf and tennis teams have made some noise on the road to qualifying. Competing in the Class 1A, Region III Golf Championship Tournament April 17-18 at the Mount Pleasant Country Club, Meridian’s Brandon Knowles won the gold medal in the Boys Individual Medalist Division to earn a spot at the Class 1A State Golf Championship held May 22-23 at Plum Creek Golf Course in Kyle, located south of Austin.

Clifton softball bound for playoffs

After wrapping up the 2023 Texas high school softball regular season with a dominating sweep of District 17-3A opponent Maypearl last week, the Clifton Lady Cub softball team turns its attention to the postseason. Entering the playoffs as District 17-3A’s third-place team, the Lady Cubs (6-4 in district, 16-12 overall) will matchup with District 18-3A runner-up Corsicana Mildred (8-2 in district, 18-6) in a best-of-three game series played at the Itasca Athletic complex this week.
