Lady Cubs wrap up first round of district

On the verge of wrapping up the first round of District 17-3A competition this Friday, the Clifton Lady Cub volleyball team has moved into strong position to challenge for a return to the state playoffs. After advancing to the 2021 Class 3A volleyball state postseason tournament for the first time since 2014, the Lady Cubs have nine returning varsity players focused on the prize.

Proving to be a strong second half team for the fifth consecutive game, the Class 3A, Division II Clifton Cubs fought back to make it a game in the fourth quarter. But for the fourth straight time, it proved to be too little, too late.

Coming off an overwhelming 53-6 road loss to the Milano Eagles last Friday night, the Jackets open District 10-2A, DII play against the perennial state powerhouse Mart Panthers at 7 p.m.

With Bosque County six-man football suffering through a rough week, the previously undefeated and 22nd-ranked Cranfills Gap Lions were handed a convincing loss by Rising Star, while the Iredell Dragons and Morgan Eagles came out on the short end of hard-fought battles last Friday night. Only the Walnut Springs Hornets escaped with a win without even taking the field as Waco Parkview Christian were forced to forfeit.
