After snapping a two-game losing streak last Tuesday with a dominating 55-20 road victory over the arch rival Whitney Lady Wildcats, the Lady Cubs fell short of clinching a playoff berth in their 45-28 home loss to the co-district leading West Lady Trojans Friday night in the Clifton High School gymnasium.

By clinching their second trip to the playoffs in the last three seasons, the Clifton Cubs put themselves in prime position to accomplish something that hasn’t been done in 20 years. With just three games remaining in the 202324 Texas high school boys basketball regular season, the Cubs appear to be on a collision course for a District 173A championship showdown with the Keene Chargers.

Putting their first District 20-1A loss clearly in the rearview mirror, the Meridian Lady Jackets solidified their grip on one of the top two spots in district by making a statement with back-to-back convincing wins last week. With Walnut Springs aiming to join Blum and Meridian at the top of the district standings, the Lady Jackets slammed that door shut with a dominating 47-29 road victory last Tuesday before moving a half-game in front of the Lady Bobcats with an equally impressive 45-23 home victory over Covington Friday night in Yellowjacket Gymnasium.

Coming off three straight losses to the District 20-1A frontrunners, the Meridian Yellowjackets suddenly find themselves in the middle of a four-team battle for two playoff berths as the 2023-24 Texas high school boys basketball regular season heads into the stretch drive. After opening the second round of district play with a hard-fought, but disappointing 61-58 road loss against the Walnut Springs Hornets in a battle for third place, the Jackets came up short at home against second-place Covington, 64-48, as the Owls completed the season sweep last Friday night in Yellowjacket Gymnasium.

In the head-to-head battle for sole possession of first place in the District 17-3A boys basketball race, the Keene Chargers surprised the Clifton Cubs early and hung on for a hardfought 48-44 win at the Clifton High School gymnasium last Tuesday, snapping Clifton’s five-game winning streak. Responding to the disappointing loss, the Cubs used it as a wake-up call and pounced on the Grandview Zebras early and never let up on their way to an impressive 63-45 victory at home last Friday night.

With three games remaining in the 2023-24 Texas high school girls basketball regular season, the Clifton Lady Cubs head into the stretch drive in control of their postseason destiny. But after suffering back-to-back heartbreaking home losses last week, the Lady Cubs will have their hands full in the battle to secure playoff berths in the balanced and competitive District 17-3A.

Despite a disappointing 62-37 loss to the high-flying Morgan Eagles, the Meridian Yellowjackets also posted a hard-fought 63-55 victory over the Blum Bobcats last week. And in the process, the Jackets secured a tie for third place as the first round of District 20-1A boys basketball competition wrapped up.

As the Meridian Lady Jackets head down the home stretch of the 2023-24 Texas high school girls basketball regular season, they find themselves locked in a tie for first place in District 20-1A. Despite the disappointing 4131 road loss to Blum that forced the tie to open the second round of district play last Tuesday, the Lady Jackets bounced right back to knock the Morgan Lady Eagles, 35-22, at home last Friday.
