With three games remaining in the 2023-24 Texas high school girls basketball regular season, the Clifton Lady Cubs head into the stretch drive in control of their postseason destiny. But after suffering back-to-back heartbreaking home losses last week, the Lady Cubs will have their hands full in the battle to secure playoff berths in the balanced and competitive District 17-3A.

Despite a disappointing 62-37 loss to the high-flying Morgan Eagles, the Meridian Yellowjackets also posted a hard-fought 63-55 victory over the Blum Bobcats last week. And in the process, the Jackets secured a tie for third place as the first round of District 20-1A boys basketball competition wrapped up.

As the Meridian Lady Jackets head down the home stretch of the 2023-24 Texas high school girls basketball regular season, they find themselves locked in a tie for first place in District 20-1A. Despite the disappointing 4131 road loss to Blum that forced the tie to open the second round of district play last Tuesday, the Lady Jackets bounced right back to knock the Morgan Lady Eagles, 35-22, at home last Friday.

Heading into the second round of District 17-3A competition this week, the Clifton Lady Cubs find themselves right where they want to be making the turn down the home stretch of the 2023-24 Texas high school girls basketball regular season. Controlling their own postseason destiny, the Lady Cubs (3-2 in district, 16-10 overall) finished the first round of district deadlocked in a three-way tie for second place with Grandview (3-2, 22-6) and Maypearl (3-2, 16-14), trailing the 12th-ranked and undefeated league leader West (5-0, 24-1).

Picking up right where they left off from their standard-setting 2023 Texas high school powerlifting season, the Clifton boys and girls teams flexed their muscles at the 2024 season opening Bosqueville Invitational meet held Jan. 13.

After all, not only do they need to complete that task once again in the second round, it all begins with defending district champion Blum this week.

After hitting a speed bump on the road to defending their first boys basketball district title in 20 years, the Meridian Yellowjacket face a crucial week as the first round of District 20-1A competition wraps up. Coming off an open date last Tuesday, the Jackets started fast but stumbled to a disappointing 67-58 road loss to the Iredell Dragons last Friday night.

Despite a hard-fought and heartbreaking loss on the road to Grandview last Tuesday, the Clifton Cubs bounced back with a vengeance by totally dismantling the Whitney Lady Wildcats Friday night in the Clifton High School Gymnasium. And in the process, the Lady Cubs surged into a three-way tie for third in District 17-3A.

Already coming into District 173A competition owning the best record built during tournaments and non-district games, the Clifton Cubs established themselves as the team to beat by knocking off the defending district champion Whitney Wildcats in the district opener last week. But the district race should be a wide open battle as Grandview and Maypearl opened with victories, while Keene and West are expected to contend.
