With the clear understanding that making the playoffs will always be an expectation for the Clifton Cubs, not a goal, the accomplishment of back-to-back trips to the Class 3A postseason and wrapped up the regular season with a convincing win at home remained plenty to celebrate for the senior-laden squad. As the Cubs dominated all facets of the game, the Clifton faithful had plenty to cheer about on Senior Night last Friday as Clifton ran all over the Florence Buffaloes, 42-0, to secure third place in District 13-3A, Division II and build momentum heading into a second straight trip to the postseason.

Carrying confidence and momentum into the Class 3A volleyball state postseason tournament, the Clifton Lady Cubs accomplished something that hadn’t been achieved in 20 years – win a playoff game. Led by senior Brianna Gonzalez and Kate Humphreys along with freshman Brystel Wise, the Lady Cubs surged to an impressive four-set victory over the Palmer Lady Bulldogs, 25-23, 18-25, 25-16, 25-13, in a Bi-District playoff showdown last Monday in Hillsboro.

Bosque County six-man surges into playoffs

As three of the five Bosque County six-man football teams advanced to the Class 1A, Division II state playoffs from two different districts, the 13th-ranked Iredell Dragons led the way by capturing the District 12-1A, DII title. But the Walnut Springs Hornets surged into the postseason with a win over defending District 12-1A, DII champion Bluff Dale, and the young Kopperl Eagles advance to the postseason for the first time since 2018 despite losing the District 10-1A, DII title to Bynum in the regular season finale.

In their first appearance at the Class 3A Cross Country State Championship as a team in school history, the Clifton boys made their presence known. And in the meantime, the lone Lady Cub advancing to state delivered a personal best performance on the biggest stage.

OwN Even without the torrential rains last week, the Meridian Yellowjackets entered the final two games of the 2023 Texas high school football season on slippery ground. After all, the Jackets needed to win their final two games of the regular season to make their first trip to the playoffs since 2017.

In their fourth season since restoring the previously defunct volleyball program, the Meridian Lady Jackets will be making their fourth straight trip to the Class 1A state volleyball postseason tournament. But after securing third place in District 18-1A and posting a convincing victory in their final regular season match of the year, the Lady Jackets believe they still have some unfinished business.

Despite trailing by eight points on the road going into the fourth quarter, the Clifton Cubs rallied for a dramatic 22-16 victory over Elkhart Elks on a wet and stormy Friday night at Jerry Ives Memorial Stadium to move into the driver’s seat for a third-place finish in District 13-3A, DII and clinching a second straight trip to the playoffs in the process. “Like we told our kids at halftime, all the close games we have played prepared them to go win that game in the second half,” Clifton second-year head coach Brent Finney said.

Lady Cubs build for playoff run

Winning four of their last five matches and building some momentum heading into the Class 3A Texas high school volleyball postseason tournament, the Clifton Lady Cubs knocked off the Class 4A playoff-bound Gatesville Lady Hornets in a playoff warm-up match last Friday after disposing of the Waco Harmony Science Academy in the regular season finale last Tuesday. Now, the Lady Cubs (8-4 3rd place in District 17-3A, 24-15 overall) turn their focus to the postseason and their Bi-District playoff matchup with the Palmer Lady Bulldogs (10-4 2nd place in District 18-3A, 1816 overall) on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

With five Bosque County six-man football teams battling for four playoff berths in two separate districts, the 14thranked Iredell Dragons and surprising Kopperl Eagles punched their tickets to the Class 1A, Division II postseason last Friday night. And heading into the final weekend of the 2023 Texas high school football regular season, the resurgent Walnut Springs Hornets control their postseason destiny, while the Cranfills Gap Lions remain in contention for the district title, but need an upset win over the Dragons.

Laying new tracks for the Clifton boys and girls cross country program, the Cubs and Lady Cubs will be well represented at the Class 3A State Cross Country Championship held this Friday in Round Rock. Competing in the Class 3A, Region III Cross Country Championships Oct.
