The Meridian Yellow Jackets stormed out to an 18-3 first-quarter lead versus the Dawson Eagles Friday (Dec. 11), only to find themselves locked in a defensive slugfest for much of the final three quarters, a blow-for-blow which the latter ultimately came away with, 39-37 in overtime.

Dawson reversed roles in the second quarter, putting up 13 points to Meridian’s four to pull within 22-16 heading into halftime.

The final two quarters appeared to follow a similar game script, with the Yellow Jackets building once more on their lead with a 10-3 scoring advantage (32- 19, Meridian heading into the fourth), before Dawson roared back in the final stanza to force overtime.

Meridian senior Gabe Nunez put up a team-high 12 points, while sophomore teammate JohnPablo Bernal closely followed with 11 points.

Meridian edged by Waco Texas Wind, 47-43

The Meridian Yellow Jackets narrowly missed a non-district win versus the Waco Texas Wind Tuesday evening at home, ultimately falling, 47-43.

Meridian came out strong to open both halves, putting up a combined 34 points in the first and third frames.

That scoring efficiency was contrasted with the Yellow Jackets’ struggles on the same end of the court in the second and fourth quarters, where the team collectively scored nine points.

Up 29-18 at halftime, Texas Wind saw momentum swing in its opponent’s favor, with Meridian outscoring the former, 20-11 in the third frame to pull within one possession (40-38).

That Yellow Jackets’ rally set up a tightly contested fourth quarter, one which saw the visiting Texas Wind work to cling to its lead with a 7-5 scoring advantage before ultimately sealing the win.
