Jackets Hit A Speed Bump

After getting off to a rough start in the 2023 Texas high school football season, the road just keeps getting tougher for the Class 2A, Division II Meridian Yellowjackets. Coming off a difficult trip to Lindsay that resulted in the Knights handing Meridian a convincing 41-0 loss last Friday night, the Jackets will hit the road again this week to take on the even bigger Class 2A, DI Malakoff Cross Roads Bobcats at 7 p.m.

Stumbling Out Of The Gate

Armed with a strong and experienced senior class hungry to win, the Class 3A, Division II Clifton Cubs stumbled out of the gate with a disappointing 26-14 loss to the Merkel Badgers in their non-district matchup last Friday played at a neutral site at Dublin’s Bob & Norma Cervetto Stadium. After the slow start through three quarters in the season opener, the Cubs played much better in the fourth quarter to get back into the game.

Bosque six-man opens with mixed bag of results

With five of the area’s eight high schools – Cranfills Gap, Iredell, Kopperl, Morgan and Walnut Springs – playing six-man football in Bosque County, the opening weekend of the 2023 Texas high school football season provided a mixed bag of results. While Walnut Springs battled to a wild win and Kopperl surprised in dominating fashion, the other three Bosque County six-man team struggled in their season openers.

Lady Cubs sweep to tournament win

Coming off back-toback, jam-packed weeks of action where they met the challenges and took their lumps, the Clifton Lady Cubs finally saw all of their hard work pay off with a slew of victories. Stringing together an eight-match winning streak, the Lady Cubs opened last week with an impressive win in Hico before sweeping to a dominating championship trophy at the Moody Tournament last Thursday- Saturday.

In search of that moment when their team comes together on the court, the Meridian Lady Jackets may have found just that in one of the most unlikely ways. After losing the first two games of the match, Meridian knocked off Oglesby in a dramatic five-set battle on the road, 16-25, 17-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-9, last Friday.

One Step At A Time

After ending the 2022 Texas high school football season with their first victory in 14 games, the Meridian Yellowjackets want to pick up right where they left off this season. Following their final tune-up scrimmage last Thursday at Chico, the Meridian coaching staff felt the Jackets took steps in the right direction in preparation for their season opener on the road taking on the Lindsay Knights at 7 p.m.

Lady Cubs take show on the road

In a wild week packed full of matches, the Clifton Lady Cubs took on some tough opponents and played some exciting Texas high school volleyball as they prepare to open District 17-3A competition in September. In a hard-fought battle before a lively crowd with both teams well-represented, the Lady Cubs (6-9) faced Rio Vista on the road last Tuesday and won the first two sets, 25-23 and 2517.

Settling into Season

Trying to put the pieces together for their fourth season since rebooting the volleyball program in 2020, the Meridian Lady Jackets took strides in the right direction with a busy opening week slate of games. Despite losing the season opener Bruceville-Eddy in straight sets, 2520, 25-25, 25-18, last Tuesday, Meridian (2-4) opened the Lady Jacket Tournament by winning two of three matches last Thursday to earn a spot in Saturday’s championship Gold Bracket.

Jackets pass first live action test

By getting their first live action of the 2023 Texas high school football season, the Class 2A, Division II Meridian Yellowjackets passed the first test in the quest to capture their first playoff berth in six seasons. Following a week of workouts in pads, the Jackets hit the road to face traditional Bosque County rival Valley Mills in a scrimmage last Friday afternoon.

Battling With The Best

Overcoming un-football-like temperatures soaring well above 100 degrees, the Class 3A, Division II Clifton Cubs held their own against Class 3A, DI’s 15th-ranked West on the road in their first scrimmage of the 2023 Texas high school football season at Trojan Stadium last Friday evening. Running a scripted number of plays during each offensive possession, the Cub first team unit exchanged touchdowns with West, while the Clifton second team rallied to do the same against the Trojans.
